Population & Employment – Connected Growth

As the largest urban area in Dufferin County, the Town of Orangeville has experienced steady growth, with Statistics Canada Census, 2016 reporting a population of 28,900 people.

The Province’s ‘Places to Grow’ initiative projects the number of residents for the whole of Dufferin County to increase by 47% from 2006 levels to 80,000 residents by 2031, creating new opportunities for business, services and residents.

Orangeville is a youthful community. In fact, it is the fourth youngest among all municipalities in the Toronto Census Metropolitan Area, with an average age of 38.7 years, well below the provincial average age of 41 years. In 2016, 40.69 percent of the resident population of Orangeville was between the ages of 25 and 59 years.

Increasing employment opportunities for Orangeville and Dufferin County are directly connected to population growth. Dufferin County’s employment base is projected to expand to 27,000 local jobs by 2031, up from 18,945 reported by the 2006 census, and will provide the workforce needed to support a growing local and regional economy.

A qualified and diverse workforce supports the growing and expanding business base in the community. Our highly-skilled workforce is sought for their talent and expertise, with more than 42% of our residents possessing a post-secondary education. As a result, a significant portion of our workforce holds positions in business and finance, skilled trades, management and applied sciences.
