Downtown Business Improvement Area

The Orangeville Business Improvement Area (BIA), represents over 230 businesses in the downtown area, and is mandated with developing the downtown core through beautification, general improvements and upgrades, promotion, events and marketing.  The goal of the BIA is to make the downtown core a place that exudes small town charm in a vibrant social and cultural business centre.

By definition, a Business Improvement Area (BIA) is an association of business people within a specified district who join together, with official approval of the City or Town, in a self-help program aimed at stimulating local business.  They use their own money in an ongoing effort to draw more prospective customers to their area by improving the attractiveness of the area and promoting it as a good place to shop, visit and do business.  All businesses within the designated boundaries automatically become members of the Association.  There are no exceptions, under the principle that all who benefit should be required to bear their fair share of the cost of the program.

While a BIA arises from the retail and professional activities of a main street, it has a profound effect on the surrounding area. It serves as an economic and social anchor, helping to stabilize and revitalize the local community.

According to Geoff Chandler, past Chair of the Orangeville BIA, “we have an extremely dedicated and passionate group of volunteers sitting on our board and sub-committees, and with the bypass now completed and the new centre median on Broadway, the opportunity to reclaim our downtown, and make it the pulse of our community is exciting indeed. Our vision is to actively promote the downtown area as the dynamic centre of Town we know it to be… events and promotions are being planned that will showcase our businesses to residents in Orangeville and surrounding areas…we want Orangeville to be everything it can be, and  bringing our members together to actively promote the downtown core is in everyone’s best interest.”

In an era of urban sprawl and the decentralization of our communities, it is important to remember our downtowns and what they have represented to us in the past and why they are important to us now and in the future. Orangeville’s business owners understand this and want to keep our downtown thriving, prosperous and fun.  We invite everyone to join in the excitement in making downtown Orangeville the heart of our community, and continue to promote the downtown core as a vibrant place to live, work and shop!
